Are you planning to doomscroll the next four years?
The algorithms will be glad to feed you 1,461 days of outrage. But they’ll only take the attention you let them have.
Four years from today, we’ll inaugurate a new president. That’s 1,461 days from now.
If you spend an average of an hour a day letting your precious attention get consumed by the endless distractions we are sure to see between now and then, that’s two full months of your life—three months, if you’re counting waking hours only.
The algorithms will be more than happy to chew up every minute of that time in the least healthy way possible.
But they’ll only take the attention you let them have.
You have a choice. You have power.
What happens on the national stage, now or even four years from now… we don’t have a lot of power over that.
But if enough of us resolve to reclaim our attention—to direct our energy locally, to foster healthy connection and civic engagement among our neighbors… to host dinner parties and volunteer and just spend time with other humans…
That might just make a difference in the big picture.
At the very least, you’ll be better off. And the people around you will be, too.
I have no intention of letting these machines gobble up my mind as much as they have. The real world outside my door is a beautiful place, and I’m going to participate in it.
I hope you’ll join me.
